Listen to this wonderful talk by Bryan Peterson author of  Understanding Exposure. It was fantastic to get to talk to the man that made me finally move from the “A” button to the “M” button. Thanks you Bryan.

  • Great podcast, Victor.

After listening I bought Bryan's book. I've been shooting on Manual for some time, so knew the key concepts already. However, the book was a great refresher with some fantastic photos. I still learned some new stuff - like f/8 - f/11 being the 'sweet spot'.

It was great hearing from the author too - gives reading the book more meaning. Dying to try some of his classes!

For twenty years or more I shot with MANUAL Pentax cameras. And then I finally bought a digital fixed lens Minolta and it was as though all I had learned flew out of my head. Where was the woman who shot all those available light theatre shots, some of which got used for publicity? Where was the woman who did all that stuff in the dark room on black and white. It's like my Digital SLR (a Nikon D80) is in charge NOT ME! Listening to your show today was like a revelation. I used to like 200 ASA color and B+W film best. I'm going to turn my Nikon into a manual and start being a photographer again instead of a 'Happy Snapper'. The only thing Bryan didn't touch on was whether he shoots in RAW, I assume he does. I remember doing a lot of transparency work and we routinely underexposed by half a stop to saturate color! How could I have forgotten all that stuff? Thank you for reminding me about proper photography! I shall go and give you a rave review on iTunes!

Sunday! Terrible weather outside. Yesterday, I did listen do this episode. Today I took a picture of my desk - nothing worthwhile to share, but I just did this crazy thing: F22. The room is quite dark. My iMac is sitting on the desk. ISO 200. I gained much experience with a crazy exposure time of 2.5 seconds. ;) And then, I had to smile. Because I started traveling on a road I did not even know before.

This episode has finally pushed me over the edge to change my mode from "Perhaps" to "Manual".

Anybody who reads this: if you did not already listen to this show, then please do so!

  • That is amazing and wonderful. It's the reason I'm doing this show.
