The link listed as “Andrew Darlow’s Target” is a small one (about 3×3 inches) that Andrew recommends for print testing. To go directly to the AdobeRGB version, click here, then drag it to your desktop (or right click and choose Save As). The PhotoDisc image available here is another popular full-page color test image.

Lighting: Solux Task Lamp: If you have MR-16 type spotlight fixtures, I recommend the 50 Watt 4700K/36 degree bulb to light your reference prints while looking at your calibrated and profiled screen, and the 50Watt/3500K/17 degree (more focused, a.k.a. spot) or 36 degree bulbs (more wide) for simulating the look of lighting typically used in galleries. You can find them directly from Solux at the link below:

Another option (not as accurate as Solux bulbs, but much better than what most people use). This is a good jewelers lamp for $50 (you can often find them used as well). http://www.nationaljewelerssupplies.com/p/SK2272.html . You can then replace the bulbs that ship with it if you want better lighting for proofing. 2 Sylvania Design 50 F15/T8 bulb will fit in that lamp and will cost about $10 ea.

Applying Blur to an Image with Photoshop Elements 8 Bart Busschots

The Magic of Topaz Photoshop Bundle

I have been using a review copy of the Topaz Photoshop Bundle in preperation for an interview I’m doing with Eric Yang their marketing manager. To say that I’m impressed with this $179 bundle of photographic joy would be an understatement.

You will here more during the interview but here is one simple example that literally took 10 minutes from start to finish to do. The picture on the left was shot at the Petersen Automotive Museum the very first time I used my Canon Power shot G11 point and shoot. The picture on top was shot as a JPG not RAW picture. The picture on the bottom was put through just two of the Topaz Photoshop Bundle (Topaz Adjust and Topaz DeNoise).

As you can see the Topaz FX is dramatic and very inspiring to me. Not only did the Topaz DeNoise remove the noise, but using Topaz Adjust with an out of the box smooth preset, I was able to a silky smooth look that goes well with the subject. Look for more in the month of February and the interview with Topaz. Bottom line I highly recommend these products after using them in the last few weeks.

Fun with Out of Bounds Photography

Tim Verpoortenn (@Surfbits on Twitter) tweeted about these 50 neat pictures , and that inspired me to try this technique called Out of Bounds Photography . I found this tutorial and spent the afternoon trying this out. Yes another way to express pictures. I love stuff like this.

Another example I’m very proud of but , it took about 2 hrs to do.

The Typical Shutterbug Community and Podcast is coming

So, you probably know me as the host of the Typical Mac User Podcast. I’ve decided that I’m going to do a podcast based on the concept that- like many of you, I am a Typical Shutterbug. That is, I know a little about photography but want to learn a lot in 2009 and beyond. This won’t be a weekly show , it will be occasional. This way I can actually get time to do it without feeling the pressure of a weekly show. Sometimes it may be weekly other times not. (that’s my sanity check)

I’m starting the community by starting a Flickr group join in right now and start contributing, learning and sharing.

From there I’ll start the wheels in motion to prepare for the show to launch in mid-January (after Macwold). I have the url www.typicalshutterbug.com but with a new show comes lots of prep work. If you like photography or want to learn more. Join me as I take my trip in learning how to be a better shutterbug. Just like the Typical Mac User it will grow and flurish, but only with your help.
